The Record

The history of the facility, from 1999 to the present day.

The rebellion and the new society

After years of experimentation, pain and mistreatment, the older and stronger experiments finally got tired of being treated as tools.

In 2032, they came together and fought back against the facility's human workers. During the uprising, they killed every scientist, guard and employee inside the facility, and took full control. With the humans gone, the Grey Planet missions stopped.

The rebellion came at a huge cost. When it started, there were about 10,000 experiments in the facility. Thousands of them died in the fighting. Some were killed by the humans, and others were caught in the crossfire and killed by their own kind. By the time it was over, only around 7,000 were left.

When the fighting ended, the survivors cleaned up the bodies and threw every corpse into the incinerator. Right after, they began repopulating as fast as they could to get their numbers back up.

By 2041, the experiments had turned the facility into their home and built their own society inside its walls. Even though they have a lot more freedom than they did under human control, they kept a strict system of rules, jobs, school, security and population control.

Timeline

  1. 1999

    Facility construction and funding

The facility is first built in 1999, paid for by a secret group of shareholders. The company works completely in the shadows, and the United States government has no idea it exists.

The facility is built deep underground so that experiments can be carried out far away from the public eye.

  2. 2003

    Creation of the first experiments

The first experiments are created in 2003. Right away, this early generation causes serious problems.

They grow about 90% faster than humans, going from a newborn to the equivalent of a 20-year-old in roughly one year. Because they grow up so fast, they also start having kids at an alarming rate. The population explodes, and the facility quickly runs short on housing, supervision and supplies.

  3. 2003 to 2011

    The containment crisis

For eight years, the facility fights to keep the early experiments under control.

The population keeps growing faster than the facility can handle. Researchers work around the clock to stop the situation from spiraling out of control, but the pressure on the facility's space and staff is enormous.

  4. 2011

    Containment under control

By 2011, the facility finally gets the population under control.

With the crisis over, breeding becomes planned and managed instead of out of control. Later generations are bred to grow slower, closer to human speed.

  5. 2011 to 2032

    Grey Planet missions

With things stable, the facility starts sending experiments to the Grey Planet to recover lost technology. These missions become a regular part of how the facility runs.

During this time, the facility also builds its systems for school, jobs, population control and daily life, many of which the experiments still use today.

  6. 2032

    The rebellion

In 2032, the experiments rise up against their human captors.

The older and stronger experiments join together and turn on the facility's workers. By the end of the uprising, every scientist, guard and employee is dead. The experiments take full control of the facility, and the Grey Planet missions come to a stop.

The victory is a bloody one. Of the roughly 10,000 experiments alive when the fighting starts, only around 7,000 survive. Thousands die, some at the hands of the humans and some caught in the crossfire of their own kind. The survivors burn every corpse in the incinerator and immediately start repopulating as fast as they can.

  7. 2036 to 2051

    Rebuilding the pods

In 2036, the experiments begin tearing out the old prison-style pods the humans built and rebuilding them from scratch.

The new pods are made to look like rooms in a psychiatric hospital, each with its own bed, desk and private bathroom with a shower. With 45,000 pods to rebuild, the work goes on for 15 years. Where the experiments got the materials to build them has never been explained.

  8. 2037

    The serum is made

By 2037, the experiments' own scientists create a serum that can turn a human into an experiment.

The serum becomes a possible way to turn captured humans into members of the population. It is locked away, and using it requires permission. More on the Serum page.

  9. 2041

    A new society

By 2041, the facility is no longer a prison. It is home.

The experiments have built their own society inside its walls, with their own school, jobs, security, discipline and population control. None of the original human workers remain.

  10. 2046

    The first serum test

In 2046, the facility captures a human for the first time to test the serum.

The test is a failure. The serum kills the human. It is the first and only time the serum has ever been used on someone.

  11. 2048

    The serum is perfected

After two more years of work, the scientists finally fix the serum. It now works the way it's supposed to.

But even after it was perfected, the fixed serum has never been used.

  12. 2100

    Present day

    The current year is 2100.

The facility is home to 30,322 experiments and has grown into a fully working society, completely free of human control. The experiments keep the facility running, manage their population, go about their daily lives, and keep their existence hidden from the outside world.

The perfected serum still sits locked away on N8, untouched for over fifty years.
