The Facility
30,322 experiments, 45,000 pods and 13 levels underground.
Population
The facility is home to 30,322 experiments.
It has 45,000 pods, which is more than enough room for everyone, with plenty left empty. Even so, the extra space doesn't mean the facility plans to fill it. The population is kept low on purpose so the facility never becomes overcrowded again. They only start trying to grow the population again if it drops below 21,000.
Repopulation
Experiments are allowed to have kids and raise them as their own families. But having kids isn't something that happens without limits.
The facility controls how fast the population grows. These rules exist to stop a repeat of the early years, when the first generation grew up and had kids so quickly that the facility almost lost control.
Nursery and childcare
A section of the facility is set aside as a nursery for babies and young kids.
Nursery staff take care of the youngest experiments, make sure their basic needs are met, and keep an eye on them. Once the kids are old enough, they leave the nursery and start school.
Food and supplies
The higher-ups are the ones who order all the facility's supplies.
Food trucks pull into a special loading bay inside the facility. When a delivery shows up, experiments put on old guard uniforms left over from the humans and unload the trucks themselves. This keeps the drivers from noticing that anything is off, and hides what the facility really is from the outside world.
There is always enough food, so nobody has to ration.
The dead
The bodies of the dead are burned in the facility's incinerator.
Cannibalism is not practiced in the facility. Nobody eats the dead.
Layout and access
The facility goes 13 levels deep. The deeper you go, the harder it is to get in.
There are no stairs anywhere in the facility. Every level is reached by elevator, which means whoever controls the elevators controls who goes where. N7 has its own separate elevator that doesn't connect to the others.
N1 and N2Staff areas
N1 and N2 are for staff only. These levels hold the entrance, offices, the front desk and the loading bay.
Experiments who don't work there aren't allowed in without permission. These levels are kept separate from where the rest of the population lives.
N3Main living area
N3 is the heart of the facility. It holds the pods, the cafeteria, the school, the nursery and everything else experiments need for daily life.
This is where experiments live, eat, hang out and go about their routines. Everyone is allowed on N3, but they're expected to stay in the areas they're allowed in and follow the access rules.
N4Private rooms and showers
N4 holds private rooms for adults 18 and older who have reported their urges and been approved to use them (see Level N4). It also has showers that experiments use when they're done.
Experiments can't just walk onto N4 whenever they want. They need approval from staff first.
N5Unused rooms
N5 is empty. Its rooms haven't been used in years, and they're full of nothing but dust, old files and human equipment the experiments have no use for. It's human tech, and they don't know how to use it. What the equipment actually is has never been explained.
Nobody is allowed on N5 except the leader.
N6Rec room
N6 is the rec room, the one place in the facility built just for fun. It has arcade machines, TVs, a couch, lounges and a fridge stocked with sugary snacks and drinks.
The TVs are restricted. They only play approved stuff, like human history, old news from years ago and movies.
Any experiment with good behavior can earn a trip to N6, but only 30 experiments are allowed down each day, for up to 3 hours each. With 30,322 experiments in the facility, a pass is still hard to get.
N7Research room
N7 holds the research room, where captured humans are kept. It has thick windows that block any view of the outside.
N7 can only be reached by its own separate elevator. Experiments need permission to go there.
N8Serum room
N8 is a restricted level. Somewhere on it is a locked room with a fridge that holds the serum.
Only certain high-ranking experiments, like approved scientists and executives, are allowed into the serum room.
N9Leader's quarters
N9 holds the leader's quarters and the election records. Nobody but the leader has ever checked the vote count.
N10The company link
N10 holds the real reports sent to the shareholders, the fake data, and the money records. This is how the leader keeps the funding coming, without the shareholders ever finding out the humans are gone.
N11Grey Planet tech
N11 holds the tech the experiments brought back from the Grey Planet before the missions stopped. The reason the missions “stopped” might not be the whole truth.
N12Newly changed experiments
N12 holds the watched pods for humans who have been turned into experiments and are still being brought into the population. It's this deep on purpose, to keep new experiments as far from everyone else as possible. Only staff and the new experiments go here.
N13Unknown
Nobody knows what is on N13. What's down there is never revealed.
N9, N10, N11 and N13 are the most locked-down levels in the facility. Only the leader can go there, along with anyone the leader personally brings along.
